Gbit Ethernet PMC Module Supports PICMG 2.16

May 1, 2002

Supporting the latest PICMG 2.6 standard for packet-switched backplanes, the Lightning PMC Gigabit Ethernet module is a dual-channel, hot-pluggable module capable of an aggregate throughput of 4 Gb/s over Category 5 or 6 copper wiring. The board was introduced as the market's first PMC module to support the packet switched backplane (PSB) 2.16 standard for Gigabit switches. The module employs Intel's 82544GC Gigabit controller that combines MAC and PHY interfaces on a single chip. The 82544GC transfers data at speeds of up to 512 Mb/s in both the send and receive directions, with an auto-negotiate capability that enables it to operate at 10, 100, and 1,000 Mb/s. Lightning is available with one or two Gigabit Ethernet channels and can be used with any VMEbus or CompactPCI baseboard that provides PMC slots. Price is $695 for a single-channel configuration.
