Atom-Sized Transistor Ready For Use In Chips By John Edwards, Contributing Editor
Measuring less than 50 atoms wide and one atom thick, Andre Geim's graphene transistor may represent the best hope yet for delaying the expiration of Moore's Law. Geim and fellow University of Manchester professor Kostya Novoselov have discovered a new material class: a two-dimensional crystal, representing a single sheet of atoms. The material, graphene, is a gauze of carbon atoms that has become one of the hottest areas in physics research...
PCIe Gen2 Clock Buffers Handle 5 Gbits/s With Very Low Jitter
Able to operate at the PCI Express (PCIe) Gen2 data rate of 5 Gbits/s, a new famiy of high-performance, zero-delay clock buffer products from Pericom semiconductor Corp. supports Intel Xeon dual-core processor server applications. The devices provide from four to 19 separate PCIe outputs on one IC and exceed the Gen2 jitter requirements.
Avnet highlights the Virtex-4 PCI Express evaluation board in its Xilinx Speedway Design Workshops. Embedded/Systems/Software Editor Bill Wong stopped by Avnet to check out its high-speed serial workshop.
The CoroBot is based on a 1.2-GHz VIA Mini-ITX motherboard with 512 Mbytes of RAM and a 20-Gbyte hard disk suitable for software platforms like Microsoft's Robotics Studio. The four-wheel-drive system supports 802.11 wireless and a 640-by-480 USB camera.
Dual-Channel Hall-Effect Direction Sensor Stands Up To Harsh Environments
The A3423 dual-channel Hall-effect sensor from Allegro Microsystems provides output signals that indicate speed and direction in direction-sensing applications involving encoder-ring magnet targets.
Feature-Rich Switching Regulator Saves Space, Power
The 2-MHz, 500-mA MCP1603 switching regulator from Microchip Technology offers adjustable or fixed output voltages, undervoltage lockout, and automatic transition from pulse-width modulation to pulse-frequency modulation.
Debug Tools Add Support For Several New Processors
Macraigor Systems LLC has added debugging and control support for several new processors: the ARM Cortex-M3 family of CPUs, the Freescale MPC 83xx PowerQUICC II Pro family, the AMD Geode GX/LX processors, and the Marvell PXA3xx family.
Embedded Computer Board Complies With PICMG COM Express Spec
The CMX-Lx45 from Diversity Technology is a highly configurable model based on the PICMG COM Express Specification. Developers can opt for the Intel Core Duo or the Intel Celeron M processor.
In our annual reader survey, more than 50% of you said you work at your "dream job." So what's it like? Send us a photo or series of photos illustrating a day at your desk. We'll choose the best photos and publish them in our October 20 "Your Issue," highlighting the state of the profession today. We'll pay $500 for the best photo series and $250 for the best photo. Send your high-resolution jpgs and tifs to Managing Editor Richard Gawel at rgawel@penton.com by Wednesday, Sept. 5. Good luck!
Power Electronics Technology Exhibition & Conference
More technical Content. More exhibits. More teardowns. More of what you need to know to find the right technologies, products and components to integrate into an ever-evolving array of complex applications. From Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, The Power Electronics Technology Exhibition & Conference, held in the Hilton Anatole hotel in Dallas, Texas, will give you the tools to optimize every element of the design process:
An educational program focuses on practical, day-to-day solutions;
A full contingent of suppliers demonstrating their latest innovations in the Exhibit Hall;
And a conference schedule that hits all of the high notes - digital and portable power, power design, conversion and management, magnetics, alternative energy, LED drivers and more.
The members of Electronic Design's Engineering Hall of Fame are those men and women whose accomplishments have shaped the electronics industry and, by extension, our world. It's time to vote for the 2007 slate of inductees. Give us a few minutes of your time to browse through our list of nominees and tell us who you think should be honored this year.
Hands-On ZigBee: Implementing 802.15.4 With Microcontrollers By Fred Eady
Having done a number of ZigBee kit reviews, I know how hard it is to cover a wide range of similar products. Fred Eady has done an excellent job. I often take cues from it.
