Sony To Sell OLED TVs In Japan

Sony Corp finally released a target date for the release of its new line of OLED TVs.

The ultra-thin 11-inch TVs — the world's first based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology — will go on sale on Dec. 1 in Japan for 200,000 yen, or $1,740.

Unlike LCD screens, OLED panels don't require a backlighting source because the technology uses bioluminescent materials to create a picture, allowing for extremely thin screens. Sony's models will be only 3mm wide.

Screen size, however, is a limitation. While the company has created a 40-inch prototype, it won't be on sale in December. That might make it challenging to compete in a market where 40-inch screens are standard.

According to Reuters reports, Sony's OLED TVs have a viewing life of 30,000 hours, and Sony will produce about 2,000 TVs per month.
