20-Bit SAR ADC Achieves 1.6 Msamples/s At 9 mW

April 23, 2014
Instead of using power-consuming delta-sigma analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for high-precision data conversion, engineers can opt for the MAX11905 20-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADC.

Instead of using power-consuming delta-sigma analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for high-precision data conversion, engineers can opt for the MAX11905 20-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADC. Maxim Integrated’s device consumes 9 mW—a 91% reduction in power over the typical 100 mW or more—while producing 1.6-Msample/s throughput with no latency and settling time limitation. It features a 98.3-dB signal-to-noise ratio and ‒123-dB total harmonic distortion. According to the company, the MAX11905 improves static and dynamic performance and guarantees monotonic function. To save space, the SAR ADC integrates internal reference buffers; overall size, including its 20-pin TQFN package, is 4 by 4 mm. Operating temperature ranges from ‒40 to +85°C. Applications include process control, automatic test equipment, medical instrumentation, and battery-powered devices.
