ADC Hits Spurious-Free Dynamic Range Peak

Sept. 25, 2006
Adding a low power consumption makes the AD9254 from Analog Devices particularly suited for wireless applications.

Targeting wireless infrastructure applications, the AD9254 analog-to-digital converter (ADC) features 14-bit, 150-Msample/s performance. It boasts a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 83 dBc at 70 MHz, while consuming only 430 mW, 50% less than competing solutions, according to Analog Devices. The device comes in a 7- by 7-mm, 48-lead lead-free chip-scale package. The ADC's high SFDR, low power consumption, and small size make it well suited for applications such as WiMAX and pico cell basestation receivers, as well as ultrasound and handheld instrumentation.

The AD9254's signal-to-noise ratio is 72.7 dBFS at 70 MHz input. This permits high-quality conversion of third-generation wireless standards, including CDMA2000, W-CDMA, and TD-SCDMA. The device's sample-and-hold amplifier maintains excellent performance for input frequencies up to 200 MHz. The unit is pin-compatible with the AD9246 and AD9233 ADCs and can be used with the company's AD8352 driver IC. The AD9254 is specified over the industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C).
