High-Density Reed Relays: Three Ratings—One Footprint

Nov. 8, 2016
Three different series of reed relays from Pickering have the same pin configuration, but different switch ratings, creating multiple possibilities with the same PCB.

At electronica 2016, Pickering Electronics will champion its innovative series of ultra-high-density reed relays for use in the construction of high-density matrices and multiplexers. The Series 115, 116, and 117 of small single-pole (1 Form A) reed relays have identical pin configurations, allowing for a common printed circuit board but giving designers a range  of switch ratings according to which part is fitted.

Because the reed switches are vertical within the package, a common footprint with a board area of a mere 3.8 × 6.6 mm is possible. Only the profile height changes with increasing power or current ratings.

Dimensions and specifications are:

Series 117: Height of 9.5 mm; rated at 0.5 A switching at 5 W.

Series 116: Height of 12.5mm; rated at 0.5 A switching at 10 W.

Series 115: Height of 15.5 mm; rated up to 1.0 A switching at 20 W.

Double-pole (2 Form A) versions are also available in the Series 116 and 117.

All feature instrumentation-grade reed switches with sputtered ruthenium contacts, suiting them for low-level or “cold” switching applications. They have an optional internal diode across the coil connections for back-EMF suppression and implement the company’s SoftCenter construction in addition to internal mu-metal magnetic screen. Mu-metal offers high permeability and low magnetic remanence, and eliminates problems related to magnetic interaction.
