Premier Farnell has announced that it is now accepting applications for its $30,000 USD scholarship fund, to be shared among 12 electronic engineering students. In Asia, Europe, and the Americas, there will be four winners each with a $2500 scholarship prize.

Students enrolled in a full-time electrical and electronics engineering class for the 2009 school year are eligible to apply for the scholarship at www.element-14.com. The application deadline is August 31. On October 1, the winners’ names will be made public.

Applicants will have to choose one out of three essay questions. Students can decide to analyze the importance of their electrical engineering degree in the present day as well as the future, and how they can utilize it to benefit the environment. The two other topics question how the student thinks electronics design will change in the future, or what new technology will have the greatest influence in the short-term future.

Lacking a student division winner for the 2008 Live EDGE Electronic Design Global Environment challenge, the funds were instead used to create a different scholarship. $10,000 will be awarded for each region.

“Encouraging innovation and forward thinking among engineering students is paramount to the development and sustainability of future generations of design engineers. The Live EDGE scholarship fund will help to encourage and develop 12 students, enabling them to continue or start their education for the year to come,” said Harriet Green, the chief executive officer of Premier Farnell. “We are excited that through these scholarships we are able to support students as they strive to become leaders in critical environmental design practices.”
