Low Power A/D converters feature 22-bit resolution

Dec. 11, 2005
Delta-sigma devices billed as being the high resolution devices available as well as among the lowest in power consumption.

The MCP3551 and MCP3553 delta-sigma A/D converters with 22-bit resolution are new from Microchip which claims they have very low power consumption. The company says 120mA are typical and that the converters are available in 8-pin MSOP packages (3.1mm x 3.1mm x 1.18mm), also making them one of the smallest high-resolution A/D converters on the market. These delta-sigma devices expand Microchip’s line of SAR, dual-slope and display A/D converters.

In addition to their low power consumption (0.85.mW maximum at 5V), these devices offer Integral Nonlinearity (INL) of ±2 ppm typical and output noise as low as 2.5mV root mean square (RMS). They also offer auto calibration with every conversion, and an extended temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. The MCP3551 performs 13.75 samples per second with an effective resolution of 21.9 bits, while the MCP3553 carries out 60 samples per second with an effective resolution of 20.6 bits.

The MCP3551 and MCP3553 A/D converters are for applications including pressure sensors, weigh scales, handheld meters, heart rate monitors, blood glucose meters and automotive sensor interface
