The MAX3737 debuts as the industry's only multi-rate laser driver to meet all requirements for SFP modules with SFF-8472 digital diagnostics and to include extinction ratio control. Operating from a 3.3V supply, the device operates at rates from 155 Mb/s to 2.7 Gb/s. It can be ac or dc coupled to the laser diode for use in OC-3 to OC-48, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel transceiver modules. Other features include automatic power control, thermal compensation, and a programmable bias current from 1 mA to 100 mA. Modulation current can also be programmed from 5 mA to 60 mA when dc coupled and up to 85 mA when ac coupled. Active power consumption is 155 mW. The device provides an edge-speed transition time of 52 ps and generates 16 ps and 0.65 ps of deterministic and random jitter, respectively, when operating at 2.7Gb/s. Operating temperature range is -40°C to +85°C. The MAX3737 is available in a 5 mm x 5 mm, 32-pin QFN package. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
