AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 16, 2005--SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGTL), a leader in analog intensive, mixed-signal integrated circuits, announced today it is shipping products fully compliant with the European Union's (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, or "Green" specification. By offering RoHS-compliant solutions well in advance of the July 2006 deadline set by EU, SigmaTel is best positioned to enable customers for a more empowered transition of their designs to the new standards.

As of July 1, 2006, the RoHS directive will require the removal of six hazardous substances, including lead, from all electronic products shipped into the EU. Additional legislation is also in development for geographies including China and some states within the U.S. This is important to SigmaTel as its products are incorporated into consumer devices, and into computers and computer peripherals which are sold into retail channels within the EU and throughout the world.

In efforts to ensure product quality is maintained throughout this transition, SigmaTel conducted thorough research and testing to qualify all new compliant products. In addition, the company has instituted an annual audit plan to verify all manufacturing processes while qualifying its supplier partners for RoHS compliance. Also, to smoothly transition customers who still require current Pb-bearing standards, each SigmaTel product can be purchased with either a Pb-bearing or Pb-free finish. This flexible offering enables all current products to maintain a quality and functional consistency regardless of the customer's SMT process while allowing SigmaTel the option to transition to 100% "Green" compliance at any time between now and July 2006.

"The purpose of SigmaTel's environmental roadmap is to do more than merely comply with future standards," said Steve Beatty, senior vice president of operations and engineering services at SigmaTel, Inc. "We are taking a pro-active position to be a leader and a promoter of these very important initiatives and are partnering with our customers and suppliers to understand and follow these directives."
