Transmit D/A Converters Scrimp On Power

Sept. 6, 2005
A family of low-power transmit D/A converters (TxDACs) reduces power consumption by up to 70% over previous devices. The AD970x series consists of the 14-Bit AD9707, the 12-Bit AD9706, the 10-Bit AD9705 and the 8-Bit AD9704. The family integrates an

A family of low-power transmit D/A converters (TxDACs) reduces power consumption by up to 70% over previous devices. The AD970x series consists of the 14-Bit AD9707, the 12-Bit AD9706, the 10-Bit AD9705 and the 8-Bit AD9704. The family integrates an on-chip voltage reference and Rset and Rload resistors, reducing component count and material costs. The ICs support update rates of 175 Msamples/s. Power supply operating range is 1.7V to 3.6V. At a supply voltage of 3.3V, power dissipation is 35 mW, and at 1.8 V, dissipation drops to 12 mW. Dissipation can be reduced by 15 mW by lowering the full-scale output current. Sleep and power-down modes reduce consumption to 5 mW for low-power idle periods. Two package types are available: a 28-lead TSSOP and a 32-lead LFCSP (lead-frame chip-scale package). Pricing ranges from $2.75 to $5.75 each/1,000, depending on resolution.
