Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. is opening a new research facility at its headquarters in Richardson, Texas. According to the company, the lab mirrors the Fujitsu Laboratories in Kawasaki, Japan.

The new Photonics Networking Laboratory will be launched with a staff of 13 researchers. Eight of them will be Japanese assignees from the Kawasaki facility. The lab will conduct applied research in advanced optical areas, including high-speed wavelength division multiplexing, optical add/drop multiplexing, optical switching, and passive optical network technologies.

Hideo Kuwahara will be senior vice president in charge of the Photonics Networking Laboratory. In 1996, he became the first scientist to transmit one terabit per second over fiber. Under his leadership, Fujitsu expects to grow the lab to a staff of 100 within five years.
