Infineon Technologies is investing ×230m on the expansion of its memory chip assembly and test facility in Porto, Portugal. The plant is expected to hit full capacity by mid-2006 and will create about 500 new jobs, taking the workforce in Porto to around 1,500.

The company says it needed to expand its assembly and testing capacities because of the ramp-up of the 300mm fab in Dresden, Germany, the planned start-up of the 300mm production module in Richmond, USA and increases to its product portfolio. Up to 600 million chips per year are planned when the new module in Porto is completed.
