The component

In addition to being the world’s smallest 45W, “green” open-frame ac/dc power supply, as per its creator, XP Power, the ECS45 series also carries medical and industrial safety approvals. For a 45W unit, the component (see figure) is downright skinny, measuring in at 50.7 mm x 76.2 mm x 26.7 mm, approximately 25% smaller than the current industry standard of 50.7 mm x 101.4 mm.

With several models available within the series, each carries approvals for Class I and Class II applications. The supplies comply with UL60601-1 and EN60601-1 medical equipment safety standards as well as UL60950-1 and EN60950-1 standards for IT and industrial equipment. Without the aid of extra filtering components, they also meet EN55011 and EN55022 level B requirements for conducted emissions.

Operating from a wide input-voltage range from 80 to 264 Vac, five models in the series offer outputs of 5V/6A (ECS45US05), 12V/3.75A (ECS45US12), 15V/3A (ECS45US15), 24V/1.9A (ECS45US24), and 48V/0.95A (ECS45US48). All of the models in the ECS45 series achieve a no-load power of less than 0.3W, a feature that ensure the end design meets compliance specs for international energy efficiency standards.

The units rely on convection cooling and achieve typical efficiencies in the realm of 87% and each can provide a full 45W of output power up to + 50°C without requiring external fans or forced airflow. Also, they operate up to + 70°C with derating. Other shared features include over-voltage, overload and short-circuit protection, and covered versions of each model are available for Class I installations. Prices start from $21 each/500.
