Said to be the first 1394 automotive controller that transmits high-definition video over the 1394 in-vehicle multimedia network, the MB88395 controller can handle multiple streams simultaneously. Streams can include HD video from Blu-Ray DVDs and digital TV as well as high-resolution navigation images. The controller uses a high-speed 800-Mbit/s physical layer and link layer, along with the company’s SmartCODEC, which provides high compression and can transmit transmit HD video without perceptible latency. An HD video stream (1280 by 720 lines) from a Blu-Ray DVD that has been compressed has a rate of 885 Mbits/s. With subsequent compression by the SmartCODEC, the rate becomes 249 Mbits/s, so two channels can be transmitted in the 800-Mbit/s bandwidth. The controller also incorporates the Digital Transmission Content Protection encryption protocol, which prevents unauthorized duplications, download, or alteration on audio or visual media. The MB88395 is sampling now in 224-pin FBGA packages. Prices start at $17.00 each. FUJITSU MICROELECTRONICS AMERICA INC., Sunnyvale, CA. (888) 385-4878.
