Cursor-Control Switch Replaces Expensive, Bulky Predecessors

Sporting a simple, compact design, the MagnaMouse switch is designed to replace bulky, complex and more expensive switches used in computer cursor controls, game controls, automotive mirror and seat operations, or any other device requiring multi-directional switches. The new switch works via a disk-shaped actuator held by magnetic attraction. It is actuated by pushing on the rim or a manufacturer-specified custom key cap that closes the contact.
Electrodes are arranged to produce different outputs when contacted in different locations. The switch can also be pressure sensitive, allowing for acceleration of activity.
According to the company, its flat-panel tactile switches using this design have reached over 420 million reliable actuations, whereas conventional switches rarely outlive one million.
