Targeting instrument clusters, infotainment systems, telematics, and climate control, Maxim Integrated Products has introduced 300mA automotive linear regulators, MAX15009/MAX15011, with a switched output and load-dump protection. The low-dropout (LDO) regulators operate over a 5V to 40V supply-voltage range, protect against load-dump transients up to 45V, and provide short-circuit and thermal-shutdown protection.

For space and cost savings the MAX15009/MAX15011 provide an additional low-resistance switched output that can be used to power remote loads independently. The switched output features a current-limit sensing circuit with an adjustable current limit, as well as adjustable current-limit fault blanking and auto-retry delay.

The MAX15009/MAX15011 provide independent enable inputs for the linear regulator, switched output, and overvoltage protector (MAX15009 only) for better control of each function. The linear regulators consume 70µA of quiescent current in a standalone configuration, and 16µA in shutdown mode. They are suited for always-on circuits, and provide enable and hold inputs for "key off" conditions.

The MAX15009 integrates an overvoltage-protection (OVP) controller that can be configured as a switch controller or as a voltage limiter. The OVP controller protects downstream circuits from high-voltage load dump, thus enabling the use of lower cost DC-DCs.

The MAX15009/MAX15011 are offered in a thermally enhanced, 5mm x 5mm, 32-pin TQFN package, and are fully specified over the -40 to +125°C automotive temperature range. Prices start at $1.32 in 1,000-piece quantities.
