OSRAM ACHIEVES BRIGHTNESS AND EFFICIENCY OF WHITE LEDs

OSRAM development engineers have achieved new records for the brightness and efficiency of white LEDs in the laboratory. Under standard conditions with an operating current of 350 mA, brightness peaked at a value of 155 lm, and efficiency at 136 lm/W. In generating these results, researchers used white prototype LEDs with 1 mm-square chips. The light produced had a color temperature of 5000 K, with color coordinates at 0.349/0.393 (cx/cy).

The key to the company's success was the efficient interplay among all the advances made in materials and technologies. A perfectly matched system of optimized chip technology, a highly advanced and extremely efficient light converter, and a special high-performance package all combined to produce record performance results.

Potential applications for this high-performance LED technology include general illumination, the automotive sector, and any application that calls for large, high-power LEDs. These semiconductor light sources are also suitable for high operating currents. At 1.4 A, they can produce up to 500 lm of white light. This means that in the future the LEDs can also be used for projection applications as blue and green chip versions.

SUPERH MICROCONTROLLER FOR NEXT-GENERATION AUTOMOTIVE POWERTRAINS

Renesas Technology America, Inc. has introduced the SH72544R 32-bit microcontroller (MCU), the newest member of the 32-bit SuperH RISC family. It enables the design of advanced electronic controls for car and truck engines and transmissions that boost efficiency, decrease emissions, and improve performance. Operating at speeds up to 200 MHz, the MCU achieves the 400-MIPS performance and the high reliability essential for next-generation automotive applications and has 2.5 Mbytes of on-chip flash memory for storing highly precise real-time control algorithms. It is available as a packaged device (272-pin P-BGA) specified for operation at 125 °C.

The many peripheral functions built into the new MCU meet the specific requirements of advanced engine and transmission control systems. Besides a multifunction timer (ATU-III: Advanced Timer Unit III), the SH72544R provides a fast multichannel 12-bit A/D converter, CAN interface, high-speed serial interface functions and multi-input signature generator. This high level of integration saves cost and allows compact controls that fit into tight spaces in engine compartments, transmission cases, etc.

The SH-2A superscalar 32-bit RISC CPU core of the SH72544R has the computing power needed to execute very fine-grained, high-level, real-time control of engine/transmission systems. Despite providing the large 2.5 Mbyte on-chip flash memory made possible by fabrication in a 90 nm process, the power-efficient MCU consumes less than 900mW, even when operating at 200MHz in +125 °C environment. Its flash capacity is 2.5 times that of the SH7058, sufficient for storing the larger application programs required to obtain performance improvements. Additionally, for data storage, the new MCU provides 128 Kbytes of flash memory with functions and endurance essentially equivalent to those of EEPROM. This eliminates the need for external EEPROM and thus reduces system costs.

Although flash memory generally has a slower maximum operating speed than digital logic circuits due to its operating principle, Renesas has applied unique technologies to increase the speed of the flash built into the SH72544R chip. Furthermore, the MCU incorporates a low-power cache system that optimizes the use of flash memory. The overall result is flash memory performance that is essentially equal to single-cycle access at 200 MHz.

Support for the new SH72544R MCU includes the previously mentioned SH72546RFCC device that facilitates software development. The SH72546RFCC differs by having a large-capacity emulation RAM for efficient debugging and allowing control parameters to be adjusted while it is operating.
