CMOS image sensor developer OmniVision Technologies Inc. has introduced the OV7670 CameraChip, a 1/6-inch VGA CMOS image sensor with a pixel size of 3.6 µ compared with 4.2 µ for its predecessor (OV7660). Jess Lee, director of product marketing, said the smaller pixel size allows for a significant reduction in module height. The single-chip device targets automotive imaging, among other applications.
The OV7670 is said to provide the functionality of a single-chip VGA camera and image processor in a 3.8 mm x 4.2 mm package that allows for a camera module size as small as 6 mm x 6mm x 4.5mm. It provides full-frame, sub-sampled or windowed eight-bit images in a range of formats controlled through a serial camera control bus (SCCB) interface. Image processing functions including exposure control, gamma, white balance, color saturation, hue control, white pixel canceling and noise canceling are programmable through the SCCB interface. A proprietary sensor architecture increases signal-to-noise ratio and improves low-light performance, according to the company.
