Useful for both programming and prototyping, the AS-14-08-01BG-3 chip scale ball grid array (CBGA) adapter supports Atmel's AT45DB041B and AT45DB081B DataFlash memory devices. The adapter can be used to convert a memory programmer DIP socket to a CBGA zero insertion force (ZIF) socket for circuit programming, or it can host the CBGA in a prototype application for debugging programmable code. The ZIF socket on the top of the adapter allows users to remove and replace the memory after making code changes. This eliminates the need to solder and de-solder the chip for each program change. It also ensures the IC is positioned correctly for connection to each ball. In addition, gold-plated test points provide a quick and reliable connection to the programmer or pc board. Single-unit price is $189. The CBGA ZIF socket, part number S-MBG-3X5-014-A, costs $124 each. EMULATION TECHNOLOGY INC., Santa Clara, CA. (408) 982-0660.
