DC/DC Module Permits Lead-Free Soldering

Rated at 48V input and 3.3V/8A output, the PKD 4210 SI is claimed to be the worldÕs first 27W surface-mountable dc/dc power module that can be connected to pc boards using lead-free soldering processes. The development addresses the growing environmental concerns over the use of lead in solders. The device is the first member of the PKD 4000 series of dc/dc converters, which is expected to span a 17W to 30W power range and to target OEMs making radio base stations, routers, and other electronic systems using distributed power architectures. The new power module features a small, 46 mm x 50 mm footprint and low 7.5 mm height. A high, 89% (typ.) efficiency is achieved by using a patented synchronous rectification-based design that minimizes heat dissipation. The devices also have a MTBF of greater than 200 years at 75¡C case temperature and I/O isolation of 1,500 Vdc. Price of the PKD 4210 SI is $56.60 each/500, with samples available from stock.
