The PM8380 QuadSMX 3G is a 3-Gbit/s, bidirectional 2:1 multiplexer/demultiplexer (mux/demux) designed for systems that support internal and external Serial ATA (SATA) I, SATA II, or Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). The PM8380 QuadSMX's four independent bidirectional channels enable software to connect a SATA or SAS interface to a SATA or SAS drive. It's particularly useful for motherboard-based interfaces that may be used with a mix of internal or external devices. The chip incorporates programmable per-port transmit preemphasis and receive equalization with on-chip terminations to provide optimal signal integrity. As a result, it can act as a repeater or link extender. The PM8380 QuadSMX 3G comes in an 11- by 11-mm, 100-pin CABG. Typical power consumption is 800 mW. Pricing starts at $14.
