The first of a new category of analog ICs for camera phones, the AD5398 is a lens driver chip that offers a solution that is 80% smaller than the multiple discrete components currently used in auto-focus applications. The device is targeted at mainstream camera phones with image resolution greater than 1 megapixel. The device integrates data converters, driver amplifiers, regulators and other key functions to provide a complete solution requiring no external com- ponents. In addition to a 10-bit DAC are inductive protection diodes, components that typically consume large amount of board space and reduce system reliability, but are necessary for the protection they provide against voltage spikes. A current-sensing resistor and internal reference are also on-chip. Only simple connections to the lens auto-focus motor, battery and controller over an I2C interface are required. The driver is packaged in a 3 mm x 3 mm LFCSP (lead frame chip scale package). Price is under $1 each in large quantities. ANALOG DEVICES INC., Norwood, MA. (800) 262-5643.
