The HSOT (high scattering optical transmission) light pipes for edge-lit displays are said to provide nearly twice the brightness of conventional systems. Applications include portable handheld television sets, digital cameras, personal organizers, automotive dashboards, military and marine electronics, and other displays that demand high brightness and minimum power consumption. The light pipe's material consists of mixtures of several inorganic particulates that have different refractive indices together with polymethyl methacrylate. When the light reaches the optical transmission plate, the particulates scatter the light with changing the color or hue of the light.
