Modules Create Smarter, Smaller Battery Packs

Oct. 1, 1998

A combination of precise fuel gauging and safety electronics on a single pc board are what enable this new line of modules to create smarter, more compact Li Ion battery packs. These 1.0-compliant SMBus Li Ion smart battery modules are claimed to be the smallest and most accurate in the industry and are ready for integration into 3- or 4-cell Li Ion packs using solder-through wire connections.Available with an optional LED fuel gauge display board, the modules provide pack design flexibility while giving longer battery runtimes. Voltage, current and temperature are said to be accurately measured and monitored to provide precise fuel gauging and time remaining information via the SMBus interface. Self-learning algorithms track charge and discharge efficiencies, adjust for various usage patterns, and compensate for self-discharge to provide ±1% accuracy.
