The Route 56.PCI, a PCI 1 port RS-232/422/485/449, EIA-530, V.35, X.21 synchronous/asynchronous serial interface for the PCI bus, targets developers integrating wide-area networks (WANs) or applications where data rates of up to 10 Mb/s burst are required. It is claimed that the device is able to communicate reliably at high speed in a variety of operating systems, making it ideal for T1, E1 and other digital service line technology applications. Based on Zilog's 16C32 IUSC that includes an on-board DMA controller to eliminate bus-bandwidth constraints, the card handles DMA locally to increase throughput. Related features include 256 KB of on-board RAM and a 32-B FIFO buffer. A security option allows the developer to request a specific two-digit hex value to be programmed into the card for recognition during software initialization, making software duplication virtually impossible. Drivers for Windows NT/2000 are included and the board is priced at $499.
