Housed in multi-chip module measuring just one-inch-square, the AC4490- 1x1 900-MHz FHSS transceiver contains all the components, including firmware, needed for creating local RF networks. No special host software is required; 1x1s appear directly to the system as cables. With the help of the company’s RF232 embedded protocol, adding wireless capabilities to boards simply requires soldering the transceivers and antennas into place and turning on the power. Allowing for plug-and-play installation, the protocol is said to guarantee successful communications while making the process invisible to the user. Over-the-air issues are managed in the firmware. Other features of the tiny transceiver include up to 115.2 Kbps serial interface data rate, 1 to 10 mW variable output power, local/remote I/Os, and –40°Cto +80°C operating temperature range.
