120Gbps Optical Modules Enhance Data-Centre Bandwidth Density

Boeblingen, Germany: Avago’s recently released multichannel optical modules target inside-the-box data-centre applications. Each standalone MiniPOD transmitter and receiver module, dubbed the AFBR-81uVxyZ and AFBR-82uVxyZ, respectively, contains 12 unidirectional channels (lanes). Each channel transfers data at 10.3125Gbps using 64b/66b encoding; thus, every module maintains an aggregate data rate of 120Gbps.

The MiniPOD optical modules are 36 times denser, and operate at 25% of the per-lane power, versus standard SFP+ solutions. Other features include superior jitter performance, high signal integrity, and low EMI emissions. The modules can transmit data up to 100 meters using OM3 fibre, and up to 150 meters using OM4-grade fibre. The transmitters employ Avago’s 850nm VCSEL laser arrays, while the receivers use the company’s PIN diode array.
