Delivering 6x the throughput of 802.11g and 802.11a/g products, the AR5008 series WLAN chipsets debut as the first to address the 802.11n draft specification. The devices introduce signal-sustain technology (SST), which promises the full potential of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology to enhance signal reliability and throughput. The AR5008 devices deliver a physical data rate up to 300 Mb/s with a real end-user throughput of 150 Mb/s to 180 Mb/s. Reportedly, the devices achieve a 50% greater sustained throughput at range than 2x2 MIMO systems. The chipsets consist of two devices, a baseband/MAC PCI host interface and a triple-radio chip. The AR5416 and AR5418 are PCI and PCI Express interfaces, respectively. Triple radios include the single-band AR2133 transceiver operating at 2.4 GHz and the dual-band AR5133 operating at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. ATHEROS COMMUNICATIONS INC., Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 773-5200.
