The ability to transmit data in both directions across an isolation barrier is afforded by the ISO518, an eight-channel, isolated bidirectional digital coupler. The device replaces multiple optocoupler-based circuits for a reduction in component count of up to 40:1 and a smaller overall package area. The device uses the firm's capacitive barrier technique, which offers the advantages of lower power consumption and lower overall cost. It's designed with input and output buffers for ease of integration into a µP-bus system. Power consumption is less than 12 mW/channel typical and isolation is rated at 1500 VRMS. Transfer rate is up to 2 million 8-bit words/second with no skew problems.
