Promising to be a cost-effective solution for adding functions while reducing power, the CAT9534 eight-bit GPIO expander targets I2C and SMBus-based systems. The device is pin-for-pin and functionally compatible with its predecessor, the CAT9554, but operates at 100 times less standby power: 1 µA maximum. It consists of eight ports, configurable as an input or output by writing to a register. An internal power-on reset eliminates glitches on power-up and each I/O port is 5V input tolerant with an I/O drive sink up to 25 mA and an I/O source of up to 10 mA maximum. Additionally, each I/O port is compatible with logic thresholds of 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5V. Available in 16-pin SOIC, TSSOP, and 16-pad 4x4 TQFN packages, price is $0.83 each/10,000.
