Introduced as the industry's first single-chip, 2.4-Gb/s IP security (IPSec) processor, the BCM5840 promises to eliminate virtual private network (VPN) bottlenecks. The processor operates with security algorithms such as 3DES-CBC, HMAC-SHA-1 and HMAC-MD5, and its architecture optimizes security processing with packet-processing options, packet-header processing, and on-chip key storage.
The BCM5840 Gigabit IPsec processor's scalable architecture is capable of handling residential equipment to center-of-the-Internet equipment applications. Available in a 208-pin MQFP, the IC sells for $300 each in sample quantities.
