Operating at speeds up to 3.2 Gb/s, the LTC5100 VCSEL diode driver integrates a digital controller with a/d and d/a converters for continuous closed-loop monitoring and control of laser parameters. Users can set bias and modulation current, laser power, peaking characteristics, and first- and second-order temperature coefficients. The device may be operated in standalone mode or via an external microprocessor through an I2C port. The device operates from a 3.3V supply and consumes 50 mA when transmitting. Other features include selectable automatic power control or constant-current control modes and comprehensive fault detection. In a 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package, price is $5.15 each/1,000.
