Lithium Niobate Modulator/Driver Supports 40-Gb/s Lightwave Systems

The FO-MDA-40-25G-1, described as a low-cost lithium niobate modulator driver, promises exceptional performance in 300-pin MSA transponders found in DPSK long-reach 40-Gb/s lightwave communication systems. Combining monolithic microwave ICs for modulator driver applications along with proprietary fabrication techniques, the three-stage modulator driver produces an eye pattern with a 3-dB bandwidth of 85 kHz to 40 GHz, gain of 29 dB, input and output return loss of 12 dB, RMS additive jitter of 550 ps, rise and fall times of 10 ps, and an output power up to 8 Vp-p with an input voltage of 450 mVp-p. The FO-MDA-40-25G-1 operates at a maximum data rate of 43 Gb/s, specifies an electronic eye-crossing control of 40% to 70%, and a variable amplitude from 0.5 to 8 Vp-p. Power requirements include +3.3 Vdc and +5 Vdc and operating temperature ranges from 0?C to +70ºC. Engineering samples are available now. NARDA MICROWAVE - EAST, Hauppauge, NY. (631) 231-1700.
