The design of advanced Layer 3/4/5 voice and data switches for enterprise, workgroup, backbone and Internet systems is said to be made possible with a new family of processors. Supporting wire-speed switching of voice and data traffic over Fast and Gigabit Ethernet and Packet-over-SONET, the GalNet-3 family presently consists of three converged voice/data network switch processors: the GT-48510 provides eight ports of 10/100 Ethernet with RMII PHY interface; GT-48520 offers a single port of Gigabit Ethernet with both GMII and PCS interfaces and supports both fiber-optic and copper media; and GT-48540 provides a single port of Packet-over-SONET running at up to the OC-12 (622-Mbps) rate.In addition to providing backward compatibility to hardware and software employed with the firm’s existing GalNet-II architecture family, GalNet-3 devices are also said to guarantee availability both of a dial tone whenever a phone is activated and the priority and availability of network bandwidth whenever needed for a given service. All three devices come packaged in 329-ball PBGAs.
