A chipset has been designed to benefit systems providers by reducing the cost and design cycle time of Ethernet packet-based broadband access systems. The chipset is based on the company's 10BaseS technology, already being used in broadband access systems to extend the reach of Ethernet using existing copper infrastructure. The standard line rate for this low power, Ethernet over VDSL, QAM solution is full duplex 12.5 Mbps, transferring the Ethernet packets transparently. Line rate is programmable to reach up to 15.6 Mbps (25 Mbps with special implementations). The Octal-10BaseS is a highly integrated system building block with CPU, clock, AGC and memory, providing glue-less compatibility with RMI, SMII-interfaces. Directly replacing standard Ethernet PHYs it can be used in switch or DSLAM applications. The three-chip solution is comprised of the PEF22824 digital transceiver, the PEF22825 analog front-end, and the 8xPEF22810 line driver. The price per port for the Octal-10BaseS chipset is $15 each/50,000. INFINEON TECHNOLOGIES AG, Munich, Germany.
