One-Of-A-Kind Telecom Timer Enables 1G/10G SyncE

Assuming position as the industry's first timing IC to provide full carrier-class clock synchronization for Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and mixed SONET/SDH/SyncE line cards, the DS3104 includes two independent DPLLs for bidirectional frequency conversion between Ethernet and SONET/SDH clock rates. It provides complete support for all 1G, 10G, and 100M Ethernet MII clock rates. The device continually monitors up to eight input clocks, and integral reference-selection logic automatically chooses the highest priority, valid input clock for each of the two DPLLs. Eight clock inputs are available, assignable to either of the DPLLs. Four clock inputs are CMOS/TTL and the others are LVDS/LVPECL or CMOS/TTL. The chip produces seven output frequencies simultaneously, plus 2 kHz and 8 kHz frame pulses. Additionally, each clock can be frequency-locked to either of the two DPLLs. Available in an 81-lead, 10 mm x 10 mm BGA, prices start at $33.60 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
