Higher density in SONET/SDH optical communications systems is possible with the single-chip Evros Mapper, which reportedly can replace up to five devices in conventional systems. Service providers use the Evros to allocate and adjust bandwidth to accommodate higher speed user needs. The channelized device allocates data over a range from DS-0 to STS-12c. Its single-package configuration can reduce the size, cost and power requirements of optical systems intended for metropolitan area networks (MANs). Evros allows for the addition of higher levels of cross connects to existing SONET networks which can be built to service a large number of users on multiple rings. It serves the channelization and termination requirements for all types of data transmission protocols, including frame relay, ATM and others. The Evros mapper comes in a 624 pin ceramic BGA (CBGA) and is currently sampling to development partnews, with general availability scheduled for Q4 2002.
