As wireless-Internet access grows in popularity, so does the need for the infrastructure to support WLAN and 2.5G and 3G connectivity. One major component of this infrastructure is the high-bandwidth, wired-Internet gateway to which wireless devices can connect. To help provide this support, Proxim Corp. has introduced Lynx.GX 16T. This high-capacity radio, which resides in the license-exempt band, offers the flexibility of indoor or outdoor deployment for cellular backhaul and redundancy.

To support increasing user density and higher-bandwidth cellular applications, wireless service providers require greater wireless-link capacity. These applications include photographs, short text messaging, Internet access, and multimedia services. The Lynx.GX 16T vows to deliver the high capacity that is required for wireless service providers to offer these applications.

The Lynx.GX 16T flaunts twice the capacity of commonly used products. It provides this additional capacity to allow future growth, thereby providing customers with an easy upgrade path. Another plus is that it operates in the license-exempt band. The Lynx.GX 16T can be deployed rapidly with little disruption to the wireless service provider's current business. Solutions in the license-exempt band, which may be increased under pending Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deliberations, give customers more flexibility and less expensive alternatives to using licensed-band products.

The Lynx.GX 16T offers an innovative "split-box" architecture. An indoor unit provides the user interface and a power source with a separate RF unit. Because these functions have been separated, customers should gain the flexibility that is needed to lower installation costs and ensure future upgrade convenience. They also should benefit from improved system gain and easier maintenance. Customers can choose to mount the radio-frequency unit indoors for easy installation or outdoors near the antenna for improved signal strength.

The Lynx.GX 16T offers sophisticated standards-based management tools. These tools promise to make it easy for customers to manage local and remote radios using a simple Web interface. In addition, it delivers advanced diagnostic tools, such as a built-in spectrum analyzer and an alarm log. These diagnostic tools help to identify and isolate issues before they occur. Further, they provide these benefits without the need for additional equipment.

The Lynx.GX 16T is available now. The product comes in both low- and high-band radio versions. One of each version is required for a complete wireless link. Each unit has a list price of $18,995. Proxim is offering a custom-designed RF unit outdoor mounting kit for $149.
