Designing Offline Non Isolated Converter Protection

Sponsored by Bourns

Learn how polymer (PTC) resettable fuses can protect offline Flyback converters.  A thermal model of the resettable fuse, surrounding solder pads and copper are used to optimize the trip time protecting the converter during overloads. For short circuit protection, high temperature PTCs demonstrate a comparable resistance drift over temperature to MOSFETs.   This solution is ideal for circuits that don’t have secondary overcurrent protection or where the initial inrush is too much for the built-in short circuit protection.
