ESD Components Provide USB Port Protection

Sept. 23, 2010
The ESD Series discrete and ESA Series array ESD-suppression devices protect high-speed communications ports such as USB 2.0.

The ESD Series discrete and ESA Series array ESD-suppression devices protect high-speed communications ports such as USB 2.0. The components offer capacitances as low as 0.01pF, which preserves signal integrity even at data rates approaching 5 GHz. For single USB ports, a single ESD0603 or ESD0402 is preferred for their small size, low weight, and low cost. For multiple USB ports, the ESA Series 0603 by 4-array has four ESD type devices on a single chip. Both series are available in operating voltages of 3.3V, 5.5V, 12V, and 24V and in clamping voltages of 17V and 25V. Depending on size and clamping voltage, prices range from $0.045 to $0.22 each in full reel quantities. STACKPOLE ELECTRONICS INC., Raleigh, NC. (888) 734-7347.
