Single-IC USB Isolator Saves Space, Cuts Costs

Oct. 8, 2008
Analog Devices' single-chip ADum4160 USB isolator simplifies isolated USB-port implementation in medical and industrial equipment, cutting costs up to 25% and design size up to 50%.

As the industry’s first single-IC USB isolator, the ADum4160 simplifies isolated USB-port implementation in system-critical medical and industrial equipment. Leveraging the company’s iCoupler digital isolation technology, the device offers 5-kV rms medical-grade isolation, upstream short-circuit protection, and fully isolated 1.5-Mbit/s and 12-Mbit/s data rates (IEC 60601-1 medical safety approvals are pending). The USB 2.0-compliant device makes it possible for medical and industrial design engineers to cut implementation costs by up to 25%, reduce the size of designs by as much as 50%, and trim development time from months to weeks. Operating off the 5-V USB supply or system-supplied 3.3-V power using an internal regulator, the device also provides isolated control of the pull-up resistor, allowing the peripheral to control connection timing. A low idle current (2 mA, maximum) eliminates the need for a suspend state. The ADuM4160 comes in a 16-lead SOIC package. Samples are available now and production quantities will be available in June. The unit price in 1000-piece quantities is $4.89. ANALOG DEVICES INC., Norwood, MA. (781) 328-4700.
