Targeting the higher bandwidth, longer cables, and new applications associated with next-generation IEEE 1394 technologies, the 1394b line of sockets and cables promise reliable data transfers. The sockets are suitable for use in desktop and portable computers, peripherals, automotive applications, set-top boxes, and a variety of digital audio and video components. Via a nine-pin interface, the cables handle data rates up to 3.2 Gb/s over each of two differential channels, plus dc power. Rated for up to 1,000 mating cycles, the connector system employs a three-stage sequential mating system consisting of cable ground, power, and signals for ESD and hot-plugging. Sockets are double shielded and are available in SMT and SMT with through-hole outer shells. Cables are available in 1m, 2m, and 4.5m lengths, and the entire line is available in beta and bilingual keyed versions—the beta versions connect to other beta products and the bilingual versions connect to legacy devices. Pricing depends on quantity and style—e.g., a through-hole bilingual socket costs $1,905.18/1,000 and 2m cables cost $10,151.30/1,000. MOLEX INC., Lisle, IL. (630) 969-4550.
