A self-powered device that measures roughness in relative or absolute units, the USB Pen Size Roughness Sensor comes with a USB interface for ease of use. Absence of a stylus tip contacting under analysis makes the device applicable not only for metals but also for soft materials such as paper, ceramics, and paint. A measurement range of 0 to 100 relative units can be translated into absolute roughness values. When calibrated, the handheld sensor can produce output as absolute roughness size. The compact unit is approximately 4" in length. To conduct a measurement, the user just attaches the sensor to the surface. The device has been designed to be used as a quality control tool for insitu inspection of surface roughness.
