5-Megapixel SoC Sensor Enables HD Video In Handsets

June 25, 2010
The OV5640, a complete 5-megapixel system-on-a-chip (SOC) image sensor, targets the high-volume autofocus camera phone market.

The OV5640, a complete 5-megapixel system-on-a-chip (SOC) image sensor, targets the high-volume autofocus camera phone market. Built on 1.4-micron OmniBSI backside illumination technology, the device delivers 720p HD video at 60 fps and 1080p HD video at 30 fps with complete user control over formatting and output data transfer. The 720p/60 HD video is captured in full field of view with 2 x 2 binning. A unique post-binning re-sampling filter function removes zigzag artifacts around slant edges and minimizes spatial artifacts. Other features include an anti-shake engine, a digital video port parallel interface, dual lane MIPI interface supporting multiple output formats, JPEG compression engine, and automatic image control functions. Sampling now, the OV5640 is available in CSP, RW, and COB packaging with mass production ramping in the second half of 2010. OMNIVISION TECHNOLOGIES INC., Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 542-3000.
