Debuting as the industry's most scalable MIPS64 dual- and single-core processors, the OCTEON CN31XX and CN30XX family targets emerging IPv4 and IPv6 networks. The processors integrate hardware acceleration options for Layer 3 to Layer 7 data, content processing, and security services. The accelerators offload processing tasks from the MIPS CPU and reduce CPU clock rates required to achieve Gigabit line rates. Each device includes one or two cnMIPS cores, up to 256 KB of L2 cache, and a set of I/Os including Gigabit Ethernet, PCI/PCI-X, DDR2, USB 2.0 with PHY, TDM/PCM, GPIO, SPI, and UARTs. Other features include operating frequencies from 300 to 550 MHz, maximum power consumptions from 2W to 7W, and throughputs up to 2 Gb/s. Each processor is available in communication (CP), secure-communication (SCP), and network-services (NSP, available on CN31XX only) versions. Operating-system support includes Linux, MontaVista Linux, and VxWorks along with a thin executive for fast-path, data-plane software. Prices for CN31XX and CN30XX devices range from $49 to $125 and $19 to $39 each/50,000, respectively. CAVIUM NETWORKS, Mountain View, CA. (650) 623-7000.
