Graphical display software supplier Metro Link Inc. and RTOS developer OnCore Systems Corp. have teamed up to provide graphical solutions with FAA RTCA/EUROCAE DO-178B certification for the mission-critical and avionics communities. The solutions will be based on OnCore's certifiable RTOS, MicroC/OS-II, and Metro Link's X Window System server, Micro-X.

Hewlett-Packard Co. will acquire Bluestone Software Inc. in a stock-for-stock strategic transaction. Bluestone provides Internet software platforms, tools, and techniques for business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and mobile Internet transactions. HP will significantly expand its Internet software portfolio by adding Bluestone's J2EE and XML application servers and tools.

Intel Corp. and Vignette Corp. have announced a global e-business alliance centered on Vignette's V/5 e-business application platform and Intel-based servers. The alliance is intended to reduce the two companies' e-business application development costs and deployment time by providing packaged software solutions powered by Intel-based servers. It includes joint technology development and committed engineering, sales, and marketing resources to target the fast-growing mid- to large-enterprise e-business solutions market segment.

IBM will invest $300 million to build an organic chip packaging manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China, to support its growing semiconductor business. The facility is part of IBM's recently announced $5 billion worldwide investment plan. The facility will produce electronic cards and high-technology chip carriers incorporating IBM's packaging technologies, Surface Laminar circuitry and HyperBGA, which are used in wired and wireless networking applications.

Verizon Wireless has announced the creation of its new wireless Data and Internet Services division. It will focus on product development, the deployment of technologies, and the marketing of wireless services. The unit will also work to create a more efficient network infrastructure for the company's data operations, including its Mobile Web product.

Service availability Internet infrastructure software provider GoAhead Software and embedded computing company Force Computers will integrate GoAhead's cross-platform service availability SelfReliant 7000 software on selected Force High Availability CompactPCI platforms. The software and hardware combination supports mission-critical solutions for environments with stringent uptime needs.

Metroworks, a Motorola company specializing in software development tools, has invested $22.5 million in Lineo Inc., a provider of embedded, real-time Linux services. Lineo and Metroworks will integrate Lineo's Embedix with Metroworks' CodeWarrior integrated development environment. CodeWarrior for Embedix will support Motorola processor architectures, including PowerPC, ColdFire, M-CORE, and 68k.

Qualcomm Inc., a provider of CDMA digital wireless technology, and Spirent Communications, a supplier of performance-analysis solutions, have entered into a CDMA test-equipment license agreement. Qualcomm has granted Spirent a royalty-bearing license to use its CDMA technology and patents to design and market test equipment products for current and 3G CDMA and 1xEV (HDR) applications. Additionally, Spirent can purchase Qualcomm's advanced chip-set and system software solutions.
