Eight new models in Valence Technology's U-Charge Power System lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery line perform well in applications with long run times. The RT and XP models are built with the company's proprietary Saphion technology, which eliminates many of the safety issues associated with traditional oxide-based Li-ion technologies to create safe, large-format rechargeable batteries.

The four RT models feature built-in battery management for voltage, temperature, and state-of-charge monitoring and cell balancing. Internal disconnects make them fault-tolerant.

The four XP models are capable of peak power rates of 500 to 1700 continuous watts. Each model integrates battery-monitoring electronics with a communications port. Up to 30 of these battery systems can be connected in series for very high-voltage applications, such as pure electric vehicles, series hybrid electric vehicles, and power backup.

A battery-management system (U-BMS) and a battery-discharge indicator (U-BDI) are available. The U-BMS can be used with 12- to 450-V applications to provide smart battery-to-battery balancing, battery system monitoring, direct control of external disconnects, and remote battery system control. The U-BDI companion device displays the state-of-charge for RT models.

Production of two of the U-Charge RT Power System batteries began last year. Production for the remaining models is expected in the first half of this year.

NEWS IN BRIEF: POWER Designers can use the GSM11 series power supplies from Condor D.C. Power Supplies as drop-in replacements for the company's GSM7 series. However, the GSM11 models deliver over 50% more power and completely comply with the European Union's Restrictions on Hazardous Substances. The 2-by 2.28-in. supplies can output 11 W, and they have a 15-W peak output. Other features include a ±5% adjustable voltage, 77% typical efficiency, and a 25-ms holdup time at 11 W. A variety of connector choices helps with compatibility and integration issues. Samples are available six weeks ARO. Complete specifications can be found at www.condorpower.com.

Measuring just 5 by 8 by 1.6 in., the APS400MX series of 400-W switching power supplies is well suited for medical or industrial applications. This series from Advanced Power Solutions offers single and dual outputs ranging from 2 to 58 V and a range of standard options to help meet an application's specific requirements. Features include universal ac input with active power-factor correction, less than 300-µA leakage current, and dual-fused input protection. Standard units ship from stock. Pricing for a single-output model is as low as $140 each in 1000-piece lots. See specifications at www.advpower.com/aps400mx.pdf.

A series of RoHS-compliant (Restrictions on Hazardous Substances) 150-W ac-dc power supplies from Artesyn Technologies works well as front ends for systems with distributed power and point-of-load architectures. The high-density TLP150 series comes in a 5- by 3- by 1.25-in. package that fits in 1U-high rack equipment. A choice of 12-, 24-, or 48-V outputs simplifies system integration. In addition to the main output channel, each power supply also provides a 12-V output for powering fans and an optional auxiliary "always-on" 5-V dc output for applications that require standby operation. Samples are available for immediate shipment, and the lead time for standard supplies is eight to 12 weeks. Pricing starts at $69 each in 500-unit quantities.
