Offered as a cost-effective device for optical power measurement, the AD8304 logarithmic converter interfaces directly to fiber-optic photodiodes, allowing it to be easily integrated into optical amps, optical switches, and transmit laser modules. In terms of performance, the device has a dynamic range of 160 dB and an accuracy of 0.1 dB. A proprietary adaptive photodiode bias function is said to maximize photodiode performance. The company says the chip overcomes the expense associated with hybrids and the calibration complexities associated with switched-gain TIA solutions. It operates on a 5V supply and comes in a 14-pin TSSOP. Price is $19.80 each/1,000. ANALOG DEVICES INC., Wilmington, MA. (781) 937-1428.
