For digital photography, the SFH 7710 surface-mount orientation sensor detects whether a photo is in portrait or landscape format and forwards this information to appropriate software. The application will automatically display the photo in correct orientation, eliminating the need to rotate photos. Measuring 4.4 mm x 4.4 mm and 1.8-mm high in a plastic package suitable for standard solder processes, it may be first optical-orientation sensor of this size in surface-mount technology. Employing a light barrier consisting of an IR emitter and a detector, the sensor operates from a 2.5 V supply and specifies an average current draw of less than 50 µA.
